About WSET and our qualifications

A: WSET is the global leader in drinks education.

Since 1969, we’ve helped people around the world develop their knowledge and confidence in wine, spirits, sake and beer.

Our qualifications are offered through a global network of Approved Programme Providers in more than 70 countries and in 14 languages. Whether you’re starting with curiosity or building a career in drinks, WSET gives you the knowledge to seek more.

A: WSET qualifications are recognised around the world and trusted across the drinks industry.

They are designed for people working in drinks, as well as those learning for personal interest. Each qualification gives you a structured way to build your knowledge, develop your tasting skills and understand the products you’re studying in more depth.

WSET qualifications are also regulated by Ofqual, the English regulator for qualifications.

A: WSET offers qualifications in wine, spirits, sake and beer.

Each subject has its own learning pathway, with courses designed to help you build knowledge step by step. You can start with the basics or continue into more advanced study, depending on your experience and goals.

A: WSET qualifications are designed to build progressively.

Level 1 qualifications introduce you to a subject and are suitable for beginners. Higher levels explore products, production methods, regions, styles and tasting skills in greater depth.

As you move through the levels, you’ll develop more detailed knowledge and a more confident, structured approach to tasting and assessment.

A: Not always.

If you're new to the subject, Level 1 is usually the best place to start. If you already have relevant knowledge or experience, you may be able to begin at a higher level.

Some qualifications have recommended entry levels or learning requirements. These are outlined in the qualification specification available on each course page.

For Level 2 qualifications, you can usually enrol without completing Level 1 first.

For Level 3 qualifications, we generally recommend completing the relevant Level 2 qualification beforehand. In some cases, direct entry may be possible if you can demonstrate equivalent knowledge.

If you're unsure, your chosen course provider can help you decide which level is right for you.

A: The right qualification depends on what you want to study, your current knowledge and what you want to achieve.

If you’re exploring a subject for the first time, a Level 1 qualification may be the best fit. If you already have some knowledge, Level 2 may be more suitable. If you’re looking to deepen your expertise or progress professionally, Level 3 or above may be the right next step.

You can compare qualifications in the Explore Courses section of our website. Your chosen course provider can also help you decide which level is right for you.

A: You can find more information in the Explore Courses section of our website.

Each course page explains what you’ll learn, how the qualification is assessed, which languages are available and what you may be able to study next.
